Adrenal Imbalance - It's Signs and Symptoms

Every day, we are bombarded by stressors – good and bad - physical and psychological. They are from our jobs, family and relationship issues, bills, poor diets, poor sleep, chronic pain, chronic allergies, and long standing emotional issues. All these tell our adrenal glands to produce stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol.

Chronically high cortisol levels from these stresses cause the adrenal glands to eventually become impaired. When this occurs they cannot respond appropriately. This resulting adrenal dysfunction not only affects their response to stress, but to other activities.

The adrenals are part of many activities in the body such as, the production and balancing of other hormones such as DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.  Cortisol also plays a part in the regulation of glucose, is a large player in the immune system and interplays with the thyroid.

Symptoms of adrenal imbalance

Because the adrenal function interacts with so many body functions the symptoms of imbalance can be varied and widespread.

These symptoms are your body’s way of telling you that it is not receiving the support it needs from the adrenals.

The following table shows some of the signs and symptoms that can indicate adrenal imbalance.

As you can see from above there are a lot of signs and symptoms that can be related to other medical conditions.  This indicates that adrenal imbalance may not always be the root cause, but may be a contributing factor in a wide range of medical conditions.

Most doctors are not trained and do not test or treat adrenal imbalances.  This is many times the reason treatments for a lot of health issues are not as effective as they could be.  In turn, many health conditions and certain drugs used to treat them can lead to adrenal insufficiency.
