WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

see below

WELLNESS WITHOUT SIDE-EFFECTS

A Comparison of Functional Medicine to Standard Western Medicine

Take a car and each day put a grain of sand in the gas and oil. Everything continues to work ok but, over time too much sand accumulates and the car starts to fail.  Warning lights come on and are bothersome, so you take the bulb out (a drug to treat the symtom). You can add all the oil and fuel additives (more drugs), the best oil and gas you want, unhook all the warning lights, but failure will continue to progress. Even if you stop adding sand the damage continues. You have to stop the damage and repair the imbalances (damage) to achieve function.

As you can see additives and turning off warning lights (drugs) may make you temporarly feel better but it does not fix the problem.  This is true for you also - drugs may help the symptoms, but the disease (damage) process constantly continues.

Isn't it time you took responsibility for your Health and Wellness.

TREATING THE CAUSE - NOT JUST THE SYMPTOMS

If the cause of the problem is not addressed, symptoms return. If the cause of the headache , for example, is muscle tension caused by local irritated nerves than only by addressing the cause could you correct the problem and become a healthier person.

The Results We Get Can Be Life-Changing

We can help: If you have any old or new symptoms whether physical mental or emotional in nature If your daily activities place great demand on your energy and vitality and well-being If you would like to be healthier more balanced and more vital than you are today If you are committed to improving the quality of your life.

WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU

With ongoing treatment for health promotion and maintenance, the claims below can be made:

  • Reduction or elimination of current symptoms
  • Vitality and stamina should improve
  • Able to take better care of your own health
  • Relationships with others can deepen and become more harmonious
  • Health problems other than those for which you entered treatment are likely to clear up
  • Reduce the risk of future illnesses
  • Reductions in long term health care cost
Symptoms are the end result of the body's inability to function properly. Currently medicine's has been focused on the removal of symptoms rather than creating an environment in which the body can function as close to 100% as possible.

Health can be achieved and maintained when your emphasis shifts toward creating optimal function, not simply removing symptoms.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a science-based field of health care. The term "functional medicine" was coined to describe the medicine of the future. In fact, today, forward thinking practitioners use a functional medicine approach that includes the following:

1. Patient uniqueness: Each individual is unique.

2. Biochemical individuality describes the importance of individual variations in metabolic function that derive from genetic and environmental differences among individuals.

3. Patient-centered medicine emphasizes "patient care" rather than "disease care. Functional medicine practitioners use a patient-centered approach to support wellness.

4. Dynamic balance of internal and external factors.

5. Web-like interconnections of physiological factors – an abundance of research now supports the view that the human body functions as an orchestrated network of interconnected systems, rather than individual systems functioning autonomously and without effect on each other. For example, we now know that immunological dysfunctions can promote cardiovascular disease, that dietary imbalances can cause hormonal disturbances, and that environmental exposures can precipitate neurological syndromes such as Parkinson’s disease.

6. Health as a positive vitality – not merely the absence of disease.

7. Promotion of organ reserve as the means to enhance health span.

8. Preventive care: Optimal health is not just the absence of disease. Even the most minor symptoms can foreshadow more serious conditions later in life. This often happens via the "snowball effect," in which a "minor" imbalance within the body produces a cascade of biological triggers that can eventually lead to poor health and chronic illness. For this reason, functional medicine focuses on the prevention, instead of just the treatment of, even the most minor imbalances. Through changes in lifestyle, environment, and nutrition, functional medicine professionals rely on their knowledge of key physiological, genetic, and biochemical processes for establishing an innovative form of total patient wellness amidst the diversity of interests in health care today.
