PROLOTHERAPY
Non-Surgical Pain
Resolution
In more than 95 percent of pain cases, surgery can
be avoided by utilizing Prolotherapy.
It is not uncommon for patients to tell us that surgery has been
recommended to resolve their painful conditions. Reasons for surgery are many, but they may have nothing to do with the actual
problem causing the pain!
The goal of Prolotherapy treatments at Saylor Medical Group is to stimulate
the body to repair injured areas
Prolotherapy is a medical procedure that
many chronic and acute pain patients, as well as athletes with sports injuries, are turning to because it is used
as an alternative to surgery, arthroscopy, cortisone shots, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, and/or chronic use of
narcotic pain medications. Prolotherapy stimulates the body to repair the painful injured area(s) when the body’s
natural healing process is not able to do the job on its own. In most cases, commonly prescribed anti-inflammatory medications
and more drastic measures like surgery, joint replacements, cortisone shots, and other therapies may not help, and often hinder
or even prevent the healing process. Many people who find themselves in pain want
to get back in the game as soon as possible – whether their painful condition is from a back
injury due to improper lifting, a work-related injury such as carpal tunnel syndrome from computer use, or plantar
fasciitis from a sports injury such as long distance running.
Prolotherapy becomes a very safe, affordable option that allows the patient to keep working and/or training during the recovery
process. It is one of the few treatments that encourages movement post-treatment (movement actually aids the healing process
after Prolotherapy). This is why Dr. James Saylor at Saylor Medical Group sees patients from all over the greater Tampa Bay
area, as well as from all 50 states and even internationally. Prolotherapy
by a skilled doctor such as Dr. Saylor can get to the root cause of your problem and help you find an alternative
to often unnecessary, costly surgeries that frequently require extensive recovery and post-operative physical therapy.
James Saylor, D.O.M., Ph.D. at Saylor Medical Group has been doing Prolotherapy since 2003 and sees everything from the simplest
of cases to the most difficult cases. Dr. Saylor treats all areas of the body where this treatment can be used. He will customize
the treatment to best meet the needs of your particular injury/condition.
Questions and Answers About Prolotherapy 1. What is Prolotherapy? Prolotherapy is a highly effective method of treating
chronic ligament and tendon weakness. In Prolotherapy, the weakened areas are injected with a proliferant solution that directly
stimulates the growth of healthy, strong tissues. The healing process can be expected to take about four to six weeks after
the initial treatment. As the tendons and ligaments grow stronger and more capable of doing their tasks, the pain is alleviated. 2. I’ve heard of cortisone
injections, is this the same thing? We do not use cortisone with any of our patients. Long term studies
have shown that cortisone injections actually weaken tissue, Prolotherapy solutions, called proliferants, cause the ligaments
and tendons to be strengthened. 3. Will this treatment work for
migraines? Migraine headaches are often caused by ligament injuries to
the neck. This same injury can also be the cause of other symptoms including pain reaching almost any part of the head and
neck, visual blurring, dizziness, ringing in the ears, loss of balance, and other symptoms. Migraines caused by ligament injury
can be effectively treated with Prolotherapy. We will also address any other hormonal or nutritional factors that may be contributing
to the migraines as well. 4. What about "sciatica" pain? The most common cause of pain
radiating down the legs is not "sciatica" or sciatic nerve injury, but a weakness or injury to the ligaments that
support the pelvic joint. This radiating or "referred" pain can be effectively treated by Prolotherapy. 5. How many treatments will I need? The number
of treatments varies with each patient. Many of our patients have reported partial or complete relief of pain after only one
session. Patients with a healthy immune system generally require fewer treatments. The average person requires 4 to 6 treatment
sessions given at 4 to 6 week intervals. We also encourage our patients to do everything that they can to heal, including
eating a healthy diet, taking nutritional supplements, getting enough sleep, not smoking, exercising, and keeping stress at
a minimum. 6. How often should I get treated with Prolotherapy? Follow-up is generally recommended at 4-6 weeks after each treatment to ensure an
accurate assessment of results, avoiding an evaluation of a patient during the "window period," which is typically
at the 2-3 week mark. Some patients are seen more frequently, especially when treating an acute injury or sports injury where
the athlete needs to return to his/her sport very quickly. As healing progresses, the number of injections required per treatment
usually decreases. The pain generally continues to diminish with each treatment to the point where the patient is at 100%
function. 7. Is
Prolotherapy safe? Prolotherapy is an extremely safe procedure. The risks are far less than taking aspirin or
motrin for a lifetime to temporarily alleviate chronic pain. There is, of course, at least a slight risk involved in any medical
procedure. In Prolotherapy, the risks and side effects will vary depending on the area being treated, and doctor Saylor will
discuss these possibilities fully with the patients during the pre-treatment consultation. 8. Will my insurance cover this? Insurance coverage of Prolotherapy
varies widely depending on your carrier, the area being treated, and your specific diagnosis. Our current patient feedback
indicates that most insurance carriers are providing at least partial coverage. Saylor Medical Group is considered an “out-of-network”
provider, but you may wish to use FSA or HSA funds/credit card to pay for your treatment. We will provide you with an Itemized
Receipt for you to file with your PPO insurance plan for potential reimbursement. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover Prolotherapy,
and our services may NOT be billed to these insurance plans. When evaluating whether to pursue getting Prolotherapy at Saylor
Medical Group, please realize that it is often less expensive to pay out-of-pocket for Prolotherapy, compared to paying co-pays
(sometimes upwards of 30-50%) of very expensive surgeries, hospitalizations, ongoing medications, and resultant rehabilitation.
